Leon Adams, a farming entrepreneur with years of experience in the agricultural industry, shared valuable insights on how to run a successful farming business. Adams Farms got its start way back in 1844 when the family migrated to this area and purchased 120 acres for $1 an acre. Today the operation consists of over 5,000 acres producing bulk commodities such as corn, soybeans, and wheat while also specializing in the more direct consumer market with pumpkins.

Leon says he’s learned a lot from the school of hard knocks. “If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid”. In other words, be willing to do some things that others think you are crazy for doing. Farming involves a lot of risks, some that can cost a lot while others gain a lot. Changes in technology have helped mitigate issues that can’t be controlled. The use of topography, gps, soil type mapping, fertility levels, water flow and other technologies have been absolute game changers for productivity. After all, the tractors can drive themselves nowadays.

Leon has used various business strategies such as SWOT analyses and hired a consulting firm in order to capitalize on strengths and identify weaknesses, along with areas for improvement. “Hope is not a marketing plan.” One major lesson he’s learned over the years is the importance of finding a family life balance. Farming is the race against nature and sometimes requires countless hours to get a crop in the ground.

We ended the visit with some up close opportunities with the farm animals that call Adams Farms home. Thank you Leon for the farm tour and for investing in our future entrepreneurs!
