๐พ Business Visit Spotlight: Adams Farms ๐
Today our CEO students had the opportunity to visit Adams Farms, where owner Leon Adams shared the story behind a family farming operation that dates back to 1844. What began generations ago has grown into a 6,000 acre operation producing corn, wheat, soybeans, canola, and pumpkins while also competing nationally in sheep showing. It was a great example of how agriculture connects local operations to a global market.
Students learned how technology and efficiency drive todayโs farming decisions, all while keeping a close eye on ROI. We even got to see a drone in action and had the chance to visit some of the livestock, giving students a firsthand look at how innovation and hands on care work together in modern agriculture. Leon also shared the reality of farmingโs uncontrollables including weather, weeds, and pests, and the importance of being positioned to handle volatility.
The conversation also focused on the entrepreneurial side of running a business. Students heard about the difference between financial analysis and a balance sheet, the role of accrual accounting, and why the business is structured as a C corporation. Leon also talked about the many hats business owners wear including HR, insurance, finance, and operations, and why sometimes the smartest move is knowing when to sub out parts of your business to experts.
One quote that stuck with the group was:
โIf you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.โ
A reminder that growth requires curiosity and a willingness to learn. As Leon shared with our students, youโre going to go to school whether you go or notโฆ youโre always learning.
Thank you to Leon Adams for sharing your knowledge and giving our students a powerful look at the entrepreneurial journey behind a multi generational family business. ๐ฑ๐
